Doodle Coat Care: Why Regular Grooming Prevents Painful Matting
Doodle breeds — Labradoodles, Cockapoos, Goldendoodles, and others — have become incredibly popular. Their curly, low-shedding coats are a big part of the appeal. But these beautiful coats come with a responsibility: regular grooming.
Why do doodles mat?
Doodle coats are a mix of their parent breeds' coat types. The curly, woolly texture means loose hair gets trapped instead of shedding. Without regular brushing, this trapped hair forms tangles, then mats — tightly knotted clumps that pull on the skin.
Why matting matters
Matting isn't just a cosmetic issue. Tight mats pull on the skin causing pain and discomfort. They trap moisture, leading to skin infections. In severe cases, matting can restrict blood flow and hide parasites or wounds.
Prevention at home
The single most important thing you can do is brush your doodle regularly — ideally every 1-2 days. Use a slicker brush, working through the coat in sections. Pay special attention to behind the ears, under the legs, and around the collar area.
Professional grooming schedule
Most doodles need professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. This keeps the coat manageable, healthy, and looking great. Longer gaps between grooms significantly increase the risk of matting.
